What a sitemap does and does not do

A sitemap helps discovery — it does not guarantee indexing, and it will not rescue thin or duplicate pages. Its real value is on large sites, new sites with few links, and sites where important pages are not well linked internally.

Include and exclude

List only canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs. Exclude redirects, noindexed pages, tag archives, parameter variants and paginated duplicates. A sitemap full of non-indexable URLs teaches crawlers to trust it less.

lastmod, changefreq and priority

Accurate lastmod is genuinely useful and Google does use it — but only when it reflects real content changes. changefreq and priority are effectively ignored by Google; they cost nothing and can still help other crawlers, so this tool includes them optionally.

Publishing it

1. Save the output as sitemap.xml at your domain root.
2. Add Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml to robots.txt — the robots.txt generator does this for you.
3. Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
4. Split into multiple files once you pass 50,000 URLs or 50MB, and reference them from a sitemap index.
