What a disavow file actually does
A disavow file tells Google to ignore specific backlinks when it evaluates your site. It does not remove the links, and it does not lift a penalty on its own. It is a targeted instrument for two situations: you have a manual action for unnatural links, or you have been hit by a deliberate negative SEO campaign and cannot get the links taken down. Outside those cases, Google ignores most junk links automatically, and a careless disavow can throw away links that were helping you.
How to format the file correctly
- Plain text, UTF-8, one directive per line.
domain:spam-site.comdisavows the whole domain and every subdomain.- A bare URL line disavows only that exact page.
- Lines beginning with
#are comments Google ignores — useful for dating your audit. - Maximum 100,000 lines and 2 MB per file.
Domain level or URL level?
Choose domain level almost every time. Spam sites link site-wide: footer widgets, sidebar blogrolls and templated author boxes mean a single bad site can point at you from thousands of URLs. Disavowing one URL leaves the rest live. URL level only makes sense on an otherwise reputable site where a single page carries a paid or hacked link.
Building the list before you generate the file
Export your backlinks from Search Console (Links → Top linking sites) plus a third-party index, deduplicate by domain, then review manually. Flag domains with no organic traffic, unrelated topics, obvious link farm footprints, expired-domain PBNs, and exact-match anchors you never asked for. Check anchor ratios with our anchor text distribution checker, and verify how old a suspicious domain really is with the domain age checker.
Uploading and what happens next
Upload at the property level in Search Console. Each upload replaces the previous file completely, so always upload the full list, not just the new additions. Recrawling takes weeks, so expect no instant movement. Keep a dated copy of every version you upload so you can roll back if rankings move the wrong way.
The better long-term fix
Disavowing is damage control. Recovery comes from earning links that dilute the bad ones: relevant editorial placements, digital PR and genuine guest contributions. Send us your backlink export and we will tell you what genuinely needs disavowing and what simply needs outranking.
