Duplicate content checker
Compare two pages phrase by phrase and see exactly how much text they share.
How the similarity score works
The tool breaks both texts into overlapping four-word phrases and measures how many they share. That catches real duplication — including reordered paragraphs — where a naive word-frequency comparison would not. Above 60% the pages are effectively the same document; between 30% and 60% you have substantial overlap worth rewriting.
Duplication is not a penalty, it is a dilution
Google does not penalise duplicate content in most cases; it picks one version and ignores the rest. The damage is indirect: your links and internal signals split across near-identical URLs, and neither version ranks as well as one consolidated page would.
Merge, canonicalise or rewrite?
- Merge with a 301 when both pages target the same intent and one is clearly stronger.
- Canonical when both URLs must stay live — parameters, print views, syndicated copies.
- Rewrite when the intents genuinely differ and the overlap is lazy boilerplate.
The usual culprits
Location pages built from one template, service pages that repeat the same intro, and category pages paginated without proper handling. Generate the consolidation rules with the redirect map generator once you have decided.
