Why pixels matter more than characters

Google truncates snippets by width, not by character count. A title of 60 narrow characters can fit comfortably while 55 wide ones get cut. Desktop titles have roughly 580px to work with and descriptions around 920px, which is why this tool measures both and warns you before the cut-off instead of after.

Writing a title that earns the click

Lead with the phrase the searcher typed, then add the differentiator: a number, a guarantee, a location or a price. Keep the brand at the end and separate it with a pipe. Avoid repeating the same modifier across a page set — near-duplicate titles compete with each other and Google will often rewrite them.

What the description is really for

Descriptions are not a ranking factor, but they are a click-through factor, and click-through feeds back into how a page performs over time. Treat the description as ad copy: state the outcome, name the proof, and finish with an implicit call to action. Include the keyword once so it bolds in the result.

Common snippet mistakes

  • Boilerplate descriptions duplicated site-wide — Google ignores them and writes its own.
  • Front-loading the brand name, which wastes the most valuable pixels.
  • Titles that promise something the page does not deliver, which drives pogo-sticking.
  • Missing descriptions on high-intent commercial pages.

After you edit

Once the tag is live, confirm it renders as intended with the meta tag analyzer and generate the full head block with the meta tag generator.
