Local SEO vs National SEO: Which One Do You Need?

How local SEO and national SEO differ in ranking factors, content, link building, cost and timeline, and how to tell which one your business actually needs.

local SEO vs national SEO

These are not two intensities of the same thing. They are different campaigns with different ranking systems behind them. Local search is decided largely by proximity, profile quality and reviews inside a small radius. National search is decided by content depth and authority across a whole country, where proximity is irrelevant.

Picking the wrong one wastes money in a specific and predictable way. A plumber paying for national content marketing is buying readers who will never book. A software company obsessing over its Google Business Profile is polishing something almost none of its buyers will look at. This page sets out the differences and how to tell which campaign you need.

The differences that actually change the work

Five things differ, and each one changes what an agency should be doing for you.

  • Ranking signals. Local adds proximity, profile completeness and reviews. Google documents how it ranks local results and none of those factors apply nationally.
  • Content. Local needs service and location pages. National needs depth across a topic so you are credible on the whole subject.
  • Links. Local can rank with modest authority plus strong citations. National is largely decided by authority, as Google’s guide to its ranking systems describes.
  • Competition. Local means a handful of businesses within a few miles. National means everyone in the country, plus review sites and marketplaces.
  • Timeline. Local can move in weeks when the profile is the problem. National is a twelve month commitment at minimum.

Five agencies matched to the visibility you need

Two of these are local specialists, two work nationally, and one covers both. All five name local or national search as a distinct practice.

Five agencies, by the kind of visibility you are buying

1. Sterling Sky

Best for: Local only, especially map pack problems
Core services: Local SEO, audits, training, consulting
Pricing: Custom pricing
Website: sterlingsky.ca

Sterling Sky does local search and nothing else, which is the right shape of supplier if your entire market is within driving distance. The team publishes its own testing on Google Business Profile behaviour and handles profile suspensions and map pack filtering.

If your question is why a competitor two streets away outranks you, this is the kind of agency that can answer it.

Pros

  • Pure local specialism with original research behind it
  • Handles profile suspensions and map pack problems directly
  • Audits and training available separately

Cons

  • No national capability
  • No published pricing

2. Rank Shifters

Rank Shifters homepage

Best for: Businesses that need both at once
Core services: Local SEO, technical SEO, link building, content, digital PR
Pricing: Custom, quoted within one working day
Website: rankshifters.com

Plenty of businesses sit in both camps: a regional service company expanding into new cities, or a retailer with shops and a national ecommerce site. Those need local foundations and national authority at the same time, which is awkward to buy from a specialist at either end.

Rank Shifters runs local SEO alongside technical work, content and editorial link building, so one strategy covers both. Every publisher is approved by you before outreach, reporting lists the live URL, anchor and target page for each placement, there is a twelve month replacement guarantee, and pricing comes back within one working day with no long term contract.

Pros

  • Covers local foundations and national authority in one strategy
  • Useful for multi location and regional expansion
  • Transparent per placement reporting, no long contract

Cons

  • Not a pure local specialist for single site businesses
  • No fixed packages

3. Whitespark

Whitespark homepage

Best for: Local only, listings and citations
Core services: Listings and citation services, local SEO, rank tracking software
Pricing: Custom pricing, software sold separately
Website: whitespark.ca

Whitespark is as local as agencies get, built around citation building, listings cleanup and local rank tracking. None of that work has a national equivalent, which makes it a clean illustration of how different the two disciplines are.

If your name, address and phone number are inconsistent across the web, this is the specific fix.

Pros

  • The clearest example of work that only exists in local search
  • Geographic grid tracking shows visibility by area
  • Multi location listings services available

Cons

  • No national SEO offer
  • Listings led rather than strategy led

4. Siege Media

Best for: National only, content and digital PR
Core services: Generative engine optimisation, content marketing, digital PR, consulting
Pricing: Custom pricing
Website: siegemedia.com

Siege Media is a national content and digital PR operation with no local component at all. National rankings are won by being the most credible resource on a subject, and that is what content built to earn links produces.

If your customers can be anywhere in the country, this is the shape of work that gets you in front of them.

Pros

  • Content built specifically to earn links, which drives national rankings
  • Digital PR in house
  • Early credible work on AI search visibility

Cons

  • No local search capability
  • Content led rather than technical

5. WebFX

WebFX homepage
Image: WebFX

Best for: National campaigns needing attribution
Core services: SEO, paid media, content, web design, reporting technology
Pricing: Custom pricing
Website: webfx.com

WebFX runs national campaigns at scale with its own reporting and attribution layer, which matters more nationally than locally. A local business can often tell where a lead came from by asking. A national ecommerce brand cannot.

The breadth allows paid and organic to run together, which is common on national campaigns where organic alone takes too long.

Pros

  • Scale and process for national campaigns
  • Attribution and reporting built in
  • Paid media available alongside organic

Cons

  • Large agency, limited senior contact
  • No published pricing

Local SEO and national SEO side by side

The table below is the fastest way to see how little the two campaigns have in common.

The one row people underestimate is link building. Local businesses can often rank without much of it. National businesses almost never can.

How to tell which one you need

Answer these four questions honestly and the answer is usually obvious.

  1. Can a customer buy from you without being near you? If no, you are local.
  2. Do people add a city or near me to the searches that matter to you? If yes, you are local.
  3. Do you have a physical address or a defined service area? If yes, local applies at least partly.
  4. Is your competition a set of nearby businesses or a set of national brands and review sites? That tells you which race you are in.

A surprising number of businesses need both. A chain of clinics needs local visibility per site and national authority for the conditions it treats. A retailer with shops and an online store is in the same position. If that is you, make sure whoever you hire is set up for both rather than good at one and improvising the other.

Mistakes that waste budget in each direction

These are the two expensive errors, and both are common.

  • Local businesses paying for national content. Blog posts that attract readers nationwide produce no bookings for a business serving one city.
  • National businesses fussing over a Google Business Profile that almost no buyer will see.
  • Local businesses buying expensive national link building before the profile is even complete.
  • National businesses building thin location pages for cities they have no presence in, which is both ineffective and a quality risk.
  • Either type measuring success in traffic rather than enquiries, which hides the problem for months.

The cheapest guard against all five is to agree the target queries before any work starts. If those queries do not carry local intent, local tactics will not help, and the reverse is equally true. Our guide to semantic keywords covers how to build that target list properly.

What to Look For in Either Kind of Agency

Four things separate an agency that genuinely works in a sector from one that lists it among thirty others. Each is checkable on the agency’s own site before you book a call.

  • It names this type of client on its own site, rather than listing it as one of thirty verticals.
  • SEO is the service being sold, not a bolt-on to a website build.
  • Reporting and deliverables are described somewhere a prospect can read them before a sales call.
  • Pricing is published, or it is clearly marked custom rather than left vague.

We did not score agencies on review counts or award badges. Both are easy to accumulate and neither tells you whether a team can move the pages that make you money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a business do both local and national SEO?

Yes, and many should. A business with physical locations and a national ecommerce operation needs local visibility per site and national authority for its category. The work overlaps on the technical side and diverges on content and links, so budget for both rather than assuming one covers the other.

Which is cheaper, local or national SEO?

Local is almost always cheaper for a single location, because the competition is smaller and the deciding factors are less expensive to influence. Local costs rise with the number of locations, so a fifty branch business can easily spend more on local than a small national brand spends nationally.

They help but they are rarely decisive for map pack positions, where proximity, profile quality and reviews carry more weight. Links matter much more for the organic results that sit below the map pack, which is where a lot of local businesses stall after fixing the obvious things.

How long does each one take?

Local can show movement in weeks if the Google Business Profile had real problems, because those fixes are immediate. National is a six to twelve month commitment at minimum, because it depends on content and authority accumulating. Any agency quoting national results in a quarter is describing paid search.

Deciding where to put the budget

If customers must come to you, local is the whole job and a specialist like Sterling Sky or Whitespark is the efficient choice. If location is irrelevant to the sale, national content and authority is the work. If you are genuinely in both races, buy one strategy that covers both rather than two agencies that each cover half, which is how our local SEO service is structured alongside the rest of the SEO work. Agree the target queries before anyone starts.
